This last week I was doing some filming for CTS and I had to show how to check my oil and change a tire. Checking the oil was no big deal but changing the tire sure was a lot of work. If you don't know the steps to checking your oil make sure you visit and check the service tips on Kelly's Garage....but back to changing the tire. As I was getting all of the supplies out of my trunk like the jack and spare tire, I was thinking to myself that I hope I never have to do this on the side of the road! Not only do you have to take out all of the junk that sometimes accumulates in your trunk, when was the last time you checked the air in your spare tire? I would never suggest changing a flat tire on the side of the highway as it is one of the most dangerous things you can do. If you do find yourself in a situation where you do need to change your tire all of the instructions are outlined in the owner's manual. My tip for loosening the nuts is to use your body weight by stepping on the bar and remember "righty tighty, lefty loosey". By the way, I've only had to change two tires in my life and both were for demonstration purposes.




This month's topic:

Oil........the life blood of your car. Changing your oil on a regular basis is the single most important thing you can do to take care of your vehicle and get a long engine life. A friend of mine has over 400,000kms on her car and she changes her oil diligently at 5,000kms. As a vehicle ages, it will start to burn oil as parts start to wear. So don't be surprised if you have to add oil between oil changes.

A general guideline for changing your oil is 3 months or 5,000kms. As Canadians we drive in what is called "severe conditions". Severe conditions mean short trips of less than 16km each way, stop and go driving and extreme temperatures. So it is important to follow the guidelines for severe maintenance. If you don't drive a lot and it takes a long time to get to the 5,000km mark it is better to follow 3 months especially if most of your driving is short trips. The reason for this is condensation builds up in your engine because it never gets properly warmed up. Water can be harmful to the engine parts and cause premature failure.

Most oils have a detergent in them to keep the engine clean of sludge. When you are lax on your oil changes the detergent deteriorates and sludge starts to build up inside the engine and that causes undue wear and tear.

Some vehicles require synthetic oil to run properly. Even if your vehicle doesn't require synthetic oil you can switch to synthetic. It will extend your oil change interval and it will help extend the life of your engine.

I often get asked about winter oil vs summer oil. A long time ago this was necessary, however our engines have become more advances as well as the oil. So now, you want to put what ever your car calls for all year round. The grade of your oil will be in a number of spots. It can be on your cap, in your owner's manual or on the sticker that Active Green and Ross puts on the upper left of your windshield. It will even tell you when it is necessary for you next oil change.

Did you know……… That the “W” in 5W30 oil stands for winter. The 5 is how thin the oil is at low temperatures and the 30 is how the oil flows at high temperatures.
